Industry insights | Heart health

February is American Heart Month, so we’re taking a closer look at some industry insights related to cardiovascular health.

According to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, heart attacks are projected to increase by 16.9% and strokes are projected to increase by 33.8% by the year 2060.¹

The good news is that survival rates for heart attacks and strokes are increasing, too. 90% of people who have a heart attack will survive of those hospitalized² and 66% of stroke victims survive past the three-year mark.³ But, treatment comes at a cost and those costs are increasing as well. Heart disease is one of the most expensive health conditions to treat in the U.S.⁴

Did you know? The U.S. supplemental health market size is expected to increase from $35.25 billion in 2022 to $59.42 billion by 2032.

Critical illness insurance, such as our Protection Series℠ Cancer and Heart Attack or Stroke Plus product, is expected to grow at the fastest rate in this market – from $5.2 million in 2022 to $9.4 million in 2032.⁵

Peace of mind | Heart attack or stroke insurance

According to the American Heart Association 50% of the population ages 45-64 have some type of cardiovascular disease. And only selling to Medicare aged clients, that percentage increases to 80%.1

When we talk about the value of these policies, it’s to help with both the medical costs as well as the indirect costs involved with a Heart Attack or Stroke, like missing work, hiring assistance for household tasks, travel, and families’ expenses. Both medical costs and indirect costs for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and Stroke are projected to increase:2 (CHD is a common term for the buildup of plaque in the heart’s arteries that could lead to heart attack or ischemic stroke.)

Our Heart Attack or Stroke insurance with optional Recurrence Benefit can help. If diagnosed with a heart attack or stroke, this policy will pay 100% of the selected benefit amount (from $5,000 to $75,000). For coverage in case of a subsequent heart attack or stroke, the recurrence benefit is payable as long as at least two years have passed since the date of the last heart attack or stroke. The recurrence benefit will pay a percentage of the selected benefit amount (not to exceed an additional 100%).
